The Miraculous Light
$350.00
Rendered in the warm, monochromatic tones of natural coffee, this 9x12" work captures the essential symbols of Hanukkah. Set against a textured stone wall, a nine-branched Hanukkiyah stands fully lit, accompanied by an amphora of oil, traditional gelt (coins), and a dreidel. The choice of coffee as a medium creates a soft, ethereal atmosphere, bridging the gap between the modern morning ritual and ancient sacred tradition.
The painting explores the tension between the temporary and the eternal. The use of coffee—a medium that is organic and subject to the passage of time—mirrors the fragile nature of the "one day’s worth of oil" that miraculously lasted for eight.
The Cruse of Oil: The large jar (amphora) represents the spiritual purity required to rekindle the Menorah after the desecration of the Second Temple. It symbolizes the idea that even a small, untainted portion of faith is enough to restart a civilization.
The Hanukkiyah: By depicting all eight candles lit plus the Shamash (the helper candle), the artist captures the climax of the holiday—the moment of "Full Light." Philosophically, this represents the Ma'alin ba-kodesh (increasing in holiness), the principle that light and goodness should always be on the ascent.
The Dreidel: Resting on the wooden table, the dreidel serves as a reminder of "Nes Gadol Haya Sham" (A Great Miracle Happened There). It brings a physical, playful element to the composition, reminding the viewer that history is often a "spin" of fate guided by a higher providence.
This painting speaks softly yet powerfully: even the smallest light, when blessed, can overcome the deepest darkness, reminding us that God’s presence is not always loud or visible—but it is constant, steady, and enough to guide our path forward.
