Poppies Woven into the Soul

Price

$350.00

At the heart of the piece is the Vyshyvanka—the traditional embroidered shirt. The sleeve is adorned with intricate geometric and star-shaped patterns, meticulously rendered to mimic the traditional cross-stitch technique. In Ukrainian culture, the vyshyvanka is far more than mere clothing; it is a sacred talisman, an amulet (obereg) believed to protect the wearer from harm. Every stitch carries a prayer for health, prosperity, and protection, acting as a visible link between the past, present, and future. A hand emerging from the embroidered cuff and holding the poppies (maky), rendered in various stages of bloom—from a tightly closed bud to full, delicate petals. In Ukrainian folklore, the poppy carries a dual, deeply moving symbolism: It represents the blood of heroes shed for the freedom of the land, serving as a powerful symbol of memory and sorrow.
